Principal’s Message

Welcome to A.S. Matheson Elementary!

We are a proud, growing school in the central zone of our district, Central Okanagan Public Schools, and are honored to acknowledge that A.S. Matheson is on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Syilx (Okanagan) People.  We have a school family that includes approximately 290 students from kindergarten to grade 6.  Our most recent work has focused on fostering confidence in each of our learners through reflection - confidence in the whole child as represented by the four food chiefs and the core competencies:

This focus, along with our ongoing work and progress, is captured in the evidence section of our Learning Plan.  This is a living document that we work to update regularly and encourage you to check back frequently and engage with us in our learning journey.

Our dedicated staff works everyday to create differentiated learning experiences that meet the needs of each learner in our community.  We work closely with families to ensure that, as a team, we are helping to develop your whole child.

Our Parent Advisory Council is another integral part of our learning community.   They meet monthly to organize special events and fundraisers, and to support ongoing school initiatives such as our hip hop dance classes and gymnastics units.  These efforts provide numerous activities and resources for the school and allow us to offer a diverse program beyond the standard curriculum.  Additionally, we have volunteers who contribute their time and energy to support student learning through activities such as One-to-One reading, supervising field trips, extra-curricular team sports and assisting with classroom activities.

A.S. Matheson has a StrongStart Preschool Program on site  that supports pre-school students and their families. The StrongStart facilitator also works collaboratively with our Kindergarten teachers in the afternoons.  We also house before and after school care program for families requiring support in the mornings and afternoons.  Our Early Learning Team leads our work as a "growing" a community of learners which is quite literally reflected in the class gardens we have on site.

Our family of Firebirds is vibrant, exciting and expanding.  We welcome one and all to become a confident part of our diverse learning community.
